Avaliou-se a resistência (e antibiose) de genótipos de batata, comerciais e em fase de melhoramento, ao pulgão Myzus persicae, em ensaios efetuados com plantas em vasos, sem chance de escolha, em Jaboticabal (SP). Foram efetuados seis experimentos, utilizando-se um total de 16 genótipos, a saber: 'Achat', 'Apuã', 'Aracy', 'Aracy Ruiva', 'Bintje', 'Ibitu Açu', 'Itararé', 'N 140-201', 'NYL 235-4', '288.719-13', '288.764-26', '288.776-3', '288.776-6', '288.794-19', '288.801-6' e '288.814-7'. Em cada experimento foram utilizadas combinações variadas dos mesmos. Nos dois primeiros experimentos as plantas foram infestadas com 30 pulgões adultos por planta, distribuídos em três folhas, com três avaliações realizadas em semanas subseqüentes à infestação, contando-se o número de indivíduos por planta. O terceiro experimento foi conduzido aprisionando-se duas fêmeas adultas no interior de pequenas gaiolas fixadas na face abaxial dos folíolos, em número de dez por planta, avaliando-se a reprodução do pulgão após sete dias, em dois plantios. No quarto experimento efetuou-se a infestação da planta com 15 pulgões, avaliando-se o crescimento da população na planta toda durante três semanas consecutivas. No quinto experimento foi avaliada a descendência de uma única fêmea adulta por folíolo e no sexto experimento avaliou-se o peso dos pulgões aos sete dias de vida. Os tricomas glandulares presentes nos folíolos e a funcionalidade dos mesmos também foram avaliados. A cultivar 'Ibitu Açu' apresentou elevado grau de antibiose a M. persicae; os genótipos '288.776-3' e '288.794-19' também apresentaram esse tipo de resistência, em grau moderado; '288.719-13' e '288.764-26' foram resistentes ao pulgão, provavelmente devido à presença de tricomas glandulares funcionais, dos tipos A e B, em seus folíolos (antixenose); entre os mais suscetíveis destacaram-se 'Bintje' e '288.801-6'.

Potato genotypes and clones were evaluated for resistance (and antibiosis) to the green peach aphid Myzus persicae, in experiments carried out with potted plants using vases (no choice tests), in Jaboticabal, São Paulo State, Brazil. Sixteen genotypes were used in six experiments: 'Achat', 'Apuã', 'Aracy', 'Aracy Ruiva', 'Bintje', 'Ibitu Açu', 'Itararé', 'N 140-201', 'NYL 235-4', '288.719-13', '288.764-26', '288.776-3', '288.776-6', '288.794-19', '288.801-6' and '288.814-7'. In each experiment different combinations of these genotypes were used. In the first two experiments the plants were infested with 30 adults distributed in three leaves; after infestation three evaluations were done during the subsequent weeks. The third experiment was carried out arresting two adult females inside small cages fastened in the lower surface of the leaflets; the reproduction of the aphid was evaluated after seven days using two plantings. In the fourth experiment, 15 aphids were placed on each plant to evaluate the growth of the population, by counting the number of aphids/plant in three subsequent weeks. In the fifth experiment the number of nymphs/female was evaluated, while in the sixth experiment the nymphs weight was evaluated at the seventh day of life. The density of glandular trichomes was measured on lower laminar surface and on the main vein of mature leaves. The functionality of the glandular trichomes was also evaluated. The commercial genotype Ibitu Açu presented a high degree of antibiosis to M. persicae; the genotypes 288.776-3 and 288.794-19 also presented this mechanism of resistance, in moderate degree; '288.719-13' and '288.764-26' were also resistant to the green peach aphid, probably due to the presence of functional glandular trichomes, types A and B, in their leaflets (antixenosis). The commercial genotype Bintje and the clone 288.801-6 were the most susceptible.

Avaliaram-se os danos causados por larvas e por adultos de Diabrotica speciosa (Germar) sobre tubérculos e folhas de quatorze genótipos de batata, através de ensaios com e sem chance de escolha, realizados no período de 2000 a 2002, sob condições de campo e de laboratório. Utilizaram-se os genótipos Achat, Apuã, Aracy, Aracy Ruiva, Ibitu Açu, Itararé, Bintje, N 140-201, NYL 235-4, 288.776-6, 288.814-7, 288.719-13, 288.794-19 e 288.801-6. Em ensaios onde se avaliou o dano provocado por larvas nos tubérculos, observou-se alta resistência em 'NYL 235-4' e '288.776-6', enquanto que Aracy, Apuã e Itararé revelaram-se suscetíveis. Em ensaios de preferência para alimentação com adultos de D. speciosa, constatou-se altos níveis de resistência em 'NYL 235-4', 'Itararé', '288.794-19' e '288.801-6'; no genótipo 288.814-7 foi observada resistência moderada, sendo que 'Achat', 'Bintje' e '288.719-13' mostraram-se altamente suscetíveis.

The damage caused by larvae and adults of Diabrotica speciosa (Germar) was evaluated on tubers and leaves of fourteen potato genotypes, under free and no choice tests, during the years 2000 to 2002, under field and laboratory conditions. The genotypes Achat, Apuã, Aracy, Aracy Ruiva, Ibitu Açu, Itararé, Bintje, N 140-201, NYL 235-4, 288.776-6, 288.814-7, 288.719-13, 288.794-19 and 288.801-6 were evaluated. In damage assays with larvae, high level of resistance was observed in NYL 235-4 and 288.776-6 genotypes, while Aracy, Apuã and Itararé were susceptible. In feeding preference assays with adults of D. speciosa, NYL 235-4, Itararé, 288.794-19 and 288.801-6 genotypes showed to be the most resistant; moderate resistance was observed in 288.814-7 genotype. 'Achat', 'Bintje' and '288.719-13' were the most susceptible to Diabrotica speciosa.

O uso da resistência de plantas associado a agentes de controle biológico pode ser uma alternativa viável no controle de Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) em sorgo. Objetivou-se estudar diferentes relações predador:presa em genótipos de sorgo resistente (TX 430 x GR 111), moderadamente resistente (GB 3B) e suscetível (BR 007B) para o controle do pulgão-verde por Chrysoperla externa (Hagen). Para isso foram realizadas, em condições de casa-de-vegetação, liberações do crisopídeo nas relações predador:presa de 1:5; 1:10; 1:25 e 1:50. O genótipo TX 430 x GR 111 foi o mais eficiente no controle do pulgão-verde, S. graminum, assim como as relações predador:presa de 1:5 e de 1:10 nos três genótipos. A interação resistência de plantas e controle biológico foi positiva e permitiu controle acima de 80% nas relações predador:presa de 1:5 e 1:10 no material resistente TX 430 x GR 111; no genótipo GB 3B o melhor controle foi obtido com 1 predador: 5 presas.

The use of host plant resistance associated with biocontrol agents may be a viable alternative to Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) control in sorghum. This work aimed to study different predator:prey ratios on genotype resistant (TX 430 x GR 111), moderately resistant (GB 3B) and susceptible (BR 007B) for the aphid control by the predator Chrysoperla externa (Hagen). Thus, the lacewings were released at the predator:prey ratios of 1:5; 1:10; 1:25 and 1:50 under greenhouse conditions. The genotype TX x GR 111 was the most efficient to control S. graminum, as well the 1:5 and 1:10 predator: prey ratios on the three genotypes. The interaction between plant resistance and biological control with C. externa was positive and permitted a control over 80% at the predator:prey ratios of 1:5 and 1:10; on the GB 3B genotype the best control was at the 1:5 predator:prey ratio.

Visando avaliar os efeitos de diferentes temperaturas de armazenamento e de genótipos de feijoeiro, Phaseolus vulgaris L., sobre a expressão da resistência ao caruncho, Acanthoscelides obtectus (Say), realizaram-se ensaios com os genótipos Arc.1S, Arc.1, Arc.2, Arc.4 e Carioca Pitoco. Os grãos de Arc.1S e Arc.2 expressaram resistência a A. obtectus nas temperaturas de 20ºC, 25ºC e 30°C; a resistência do genótipo Arc.1 diminuiu à medida que a temperatura de armazenamento foi elevada de 25ºC para 30ºC. A interação genótipos x temperaturas foi significativa, indicando que a elevação da temperatura afeta a expressão da resistência. A temperatura de 20ºC foi a mais adequada para discriminar os genótipos de feijoeiro, quanto a resistência.

Aiming to evaluate the effect of different temperatures of storage and bean genotypes, Phaseolus vulgaris L., on the expression of resistance to the bean weevil, Acanthoscelides obtectus (Say), tests were carried out with the genotypes Arc.1S, Arc.1, Arc.2, Arc.4 and Carioca Pitoco. Grains of Arc.1S and Arc.2 expressed resistance to A. obtectus at 20ºC, 25ºC and 30ºC; the resistance of Arc.1 was reduced as the storage temperature increased from 25ºC to 30ºC. The interaction genotypes x temperatures was significant, indicating that the increase of temperature affects the expression of resistance. The 20ºC temperature was the most suitable to allow bean genotypes to be discriminate in terms of resistance.

Este trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de avaliar em sete genótipos de soja, os tipos de resistência à mosca-branca Bemisia tabaci Genn. biótipo B, bem como a correlação entre a densidade dos tricomas presentes nos folíolos dos genótipos estudados e a preferência de oviposição da espécie. Os ensaios foram conduzidos na área experimental e no Laboratório de Resistência de Plantas a Insetos do Departamento de Fitossanidade, da Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias - Campus de Jaboticabal - UNESP, Jaboticabal, SP, entre outubro de 2000 e janeiro de 2001. Dentre os genótipos testados, BR-82 12547 e PI 229358 apresentaram resistência do tipo nãopreferência para oviposição à mosca branca; a oviposição foi correlacionada positivamente com a densidade total de tricomas. Assim, PI 227687, com a maior quantidade de tricomas, foi o genótipo mais ovipositado, enquanto que BR-82 12547 e PI 229358, com as menores quantidades de tricomas, foram os menos ovipositados. O ensaio de antibiose foi realizado utilizando-se cinco genótipos: BR-82 12547, IAC 100, IAC 78-2318, PI 229358 e PI 227687, selecionados do ensaio de não-preferência para oviposição. IAC 100 destacou-se por afetar negativamente B. tabaci biótipo B, prolongando o período ninfal (12,8 dias) e reduzindo a emergência de adultos (80,0%).

Trials were carried out with seven soybean genotypes, to evaluate the resistance to Bemisia tabaci Genn. biotype B, between October 2000 and January 2001, at the Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias - UNESP Jaboticabal, SP, Brazil. Oviposition non-preference (free choice and no-choice tests) and antibiosis were evaluated as well as the correlation between the density of the trichomes present in the genotypes' leaflets and oviposition preference. Among the genotypes tested, BR-82 12547 and PI 229358 showed non-preference type resistance to oviposition of the silverleaf whitefly, and oviposition was positively correlated with the total density of trichomes. Thus, PI 227687 with the biggest quantity of trichomes was the most oviposited genotype, whereas BR-82 12547 and PI 229358 with the smallest quantities of trichomes were the least oviposited genotypes. The antibiosis test was accomplished with five genotypes: BR-82 12547, IAC 100, IAC 78-2318, PI 229358 and PI 227687, selected from the oviposition non-preference test. IAC 100 affected negatively B. tabaci biotype B, by prolonging the ninfal period (12,8 days) and the reducing adults' emergence (80,0%).

A integração entre plantas resistentes e agentes de controle biológico pode ser uma alternativa viável para o manejo do pulgão-verde, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), na cultura do sorgo. Experimentos foram conduzidos com a finalidade de avaliar o efeito de quatro genótipos de sorgo: GR 11111 e TX 430 x GR 111 (resistentes), GB 3B (moderadamente resistente), e BR 007B (suscetível), sobre o controle biológico do pulgão S. graminum realizado pelo predador Chrysoperla externa (Hagen). Para isso, avaliaram-se diferentes níveis de infestação de S. graminum, na presença e ausência do predador, em casa-de-vegetação e a viabilidade de controle de S. graminum no campo. O efeito do predador foi notado 25 dias após a infestação, proporcionando maior crescimento das plantas e menores danos. Os danos também foram menores nos genótipos resistentes e aumentaram com a elevação dos níveis de infestação, sendo menores na presença do predador C. externa. Em condições de campo, a integração dos dois métodos de controle proporcionou 83% de redução de danos, quando se utilizou o genótipo resistente TX 430 x GR 111, que foi considerado o mais promissor dentre os estudados.

The integration of plant resistance and biological control agent can be a viable alternative to the management of the greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), on sorghum. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of four sorghum genotypes: GR 11111 and TX 430 x GR 111 (resistants), GB 3B (moderately resistant), and BR 007B (susceptible), on the biological control of S. graminum by the predator lacewing, Chrysoperla externa (Hagen). Different levels of infestation, in presence or absence of the predator were studied in greenhouse, and the viability of S. graminum control was evaluated under field conditions. The effect of the predator was observed 25 days after infestation, resulting in higher percentage of plant growth and lower damage. Damage was lower in resistant genotypes and increased with higher levels of infestation, being low in presence of predator C. externa. In field conditions, plant damage was reduced in 83%, when the genotype TX 430 x GR 111 was used in association with C. externa.

Os efeitos de cinco genótipos de soja [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] ('BR-16', 'IAC-100,' PI 227687, PI 229358, PI 274454) no desenvolvimento ninfal, peso de adulto e quantidade de lipídio em Nezara viridula (L.) foram avaliados em laboratório. Quando as ninfas se alimentaram de vagens de PI 227687 (resistente) e 'BR-16' (suscetível), sua mortalidade foi de 66,2% e 27,5%, respectivamente. Ninfas de segundo ínstar, mantidas desde a eclosão em placas de Petri contendo vagens de PI 274454 e 'BR-16', pesaram 1,1 mg e 1,0 mg, respectivamente; sendo mais pesadas que aquelas alimentadas com vagens da PI 227687 (0,7 mg) e 'IAC-100' (0,7 mg). O peso fresco de adulto foi 146,9 mg quando as ninfas se alimentaram em 'BR-16,' 127,0 mg em PI 227687 e 125,5 mg em 'IAC-100'. Os dois últimos genótipos também afetaram negativamente o ganho de peso do percevejo. Fêmeas acumularam menos lipídio quando se alimentaram em 'IAC-100' (4,8 mg) e PI 227687 (4,3 mg), em comparação com aquelas alimentadas em outros genótipos. Por seus efeitos deletérios, PI 227687 confirma-se como alimento inadequado para N. viridula e como o genótipo mais promissor para ser usado em programas de melhoramento como fonte de resistência a percevejos.

The effects of five soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] genotypes ('BR-16', 'IAC-100', PI 227687, PI 229358, PI 274454) on nymphal development, adult weight and lipid content of the stink bug Nezara viridula (L.), were evaluated in the laboratory. When fed on the pods of PI 227687 (resistant) and of 'BR-16' (susceptible) nymph mortalities were respectively 66.2% and 27.5%. Second instar nymphs, maintained since hatching in petri dishes containing PI 274454 and 'BR-16' pods, weighed 1.1 mg and 1.0 mg, respectively; they were heavier than those fed with PI 227687 (0.7 mg) and 'IAC-100' (0.7 mg) pods. Adult fresh weights were 146.9 mg when fed on 'BR-16', 127.0 mg with PI 227687 and 125.5 mg with 'IAC-100'. The later two genotypes also negatively affected stink bug weight gain. Females accumulated less lipid when fed on 'IAC-100' (4.8 mg) and PI 227687 (4.3 mg) than those fed on the other genotypes. By their deleterious effects, PI 227687 is confirmed as an inadequate food to N. viridula and as the most promising genotype for use in soybean breeding programs as sources of resistance to stink bug.

Dez genótipos de soja: IAC 100, IAC 74-2832, IAC 90-2971, IAC 78-2318, PI 227687, PI 229358, PI 274454, BR-82 12547, MG/BRS-68 (Vencedora) e FT-5 (Formosa), foram avaliados quanto a resistência, do tipo não-preferência para oviposição, à mosca-branca, Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) biótipo B. O ensaio foi realizado no campo experimental da FCAV/UNESP, Jaboticabal-SP, de outubro de 1999 a janeiro de 2000. Pretendeu-se, ainda, verificar a preferência de oviposição da referida espécie em relação às folhas unifolioladas e trifolioladas, e quanto à posição do folíolo na folha trifoliolada, e estabelecer o número mínimo de folíolos necessários para amostrar adequadamente a oviposição da mosca branca. Constatou-se que a oviposição foi menor nos genótipos BR-82 12547 e IAC 74-2832 em todas as avaliações (15, 30, 45, 65 e 85 dias após a emergência das plantas). As maiores taxas de oviposição ocorreram em IAC 90-2971, IAC 100, PI 227687 e PI 274454. O número médio de ovos depositados por seção de folha pelas fêmeas de B. tabaci biótipo B nas folhas trifolioladas não diferiu significativamente dos obtidos nas unifolioladas, 15 dias após a emergência das plantas (estádios de desenvolvimento entre V3 e V5), em 70% dos genótipos. Quanto à posição dos folíolos, a mosca-branca ovipositou indistintamente sobre os folíolos mediano e laterais. Também o número médio de ovos depositados por área foliar, pela mosca-branca, nos três folíolos da folha trifoliolada não diferiu significativamente da média obtida para dois ou um folíolo desta, o que sugere ser, um folíolo, uma unidade amostral representativa da oviposição de B. tabaci biótipo B em soja.

Ten soybean genotypes: IAC 100, IAC 74-2832, IAC 90-2971, IAC 78-2318, PI 227687, PI 229358, PI 274454, BR-82 12547, MG/BRS-68 (Vencedora) and FT-5 (Formosa) were evaluated for resistance to Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) B biotype, in order to identify oviposition non preference by the insect. The experiment was held in the field, at the Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias/UNESP, Jaboticabal-SP, from October 1999 to January 2000. The oviposition preference of the whitefly between unifoliolate and trifoliolate leaves and the preference in relation to the position of the leaflets in the trifoliolate leaves were also determined; also the minimum number of leaflets necessary to evaluate oviposition was established. Oviposition was lower on the genotypes BR-82 12547 and IAC 74-2832 throughout the sampling period (15, 30, 45, 65, and 85 days after the emergence). Higher oviposition rates were observed in IAC 90-2971, IAC 100, PI 227687 and PI 274454. The density of eggs deposited by B. tabaci B biotype on the surface of the trifoliolate leaves was similar to that obtained on the unifoliolate ones, 15 days after emergence of the plants (stage of development between V3 and V4), in 70% of the genotypes. Also, the oviposition of silverleaf whitefly on the medium and lateral leaflets was similar. Finally, the density of eggs laid on the three leaflets of the trifoliolate leaves were not significantly different from the density obtained on two or only one, suggesting that a single leaflet could be a representative sampling unit for oviposition studies of the B. tabaci B biotype in soybean.

O trabalho objetivou avaliar o efeito indireto da resistência de genótipos de sorgo sobre o predador Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) usando o pulgão Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) como presa. Os genótipos usados no estudo foram: GR 11111 e TX 430 x GR 111 (resistentes), GB 3B (moderadamente resistente) e BR 007B (suscetível). Larvas recém-eclodidas foram confinadas individualmente em recipientes de vidro e alimentadas com S. graminum, criados separadamente em cada um dos quatro genótipos. Após a emergência, os adultos obtidos de cada tratamento foram sexados e agrupados aos casais, colocados em gaiolas contendo dieta à base de levedo de cerveja e mel. Os insetos foram observados diariamente da fase jovem até o período de 60 dias após a emergência do adulto. Genótipos com maior grau de resistência proporcionaram maior consumo de pulgões pelo predador, porém menor peso a este. Quando os pulgões foram criados no genótipo resistente GR 11111, o peso das larvas, sobrevivência da pré-pupa e longevidade da fêmea do predador foram inferiores. As associações positivas observadas entre o predador, C. externa, e o genótipo resistente, TX 430 x GR 111, e entre o predador e o genótipo moderadamente resistente GB 3B, evidenciaram a possibilidade de integração entre os dois métodos de controle: resistência de plantas e controle biológico.

The work aimed to evaluate the indirect effect of sorghum genotypes resistance on biological aspects of the predator Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) using the aphid Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) as prey. The genotypes used in the study were: GR 11111 and TX 430 x GR 111 (resistant), GB 3B (moderately resistant) and BR 007B (susceptible). Newrly hatched larvae were confined individually in glass vials and fed on S. graminum reared separately in each one of the four genotypes. After emergence, adults from each treatment were paired in cages and provided with yeast and honey. The insects were observed daily from immature phase until 60 days after adult emergence. Increases on genotype resistance rate promoted higher consumption of aphids by the predator and lesser weight. Lower larval weight, pre-pupal survival and adult longevity of the predator were verified when the aphids were reared on the genotype GR 11111. Beneficial association was observed among the predator C. externa and the resistant genotype TX 430 x GR 111 and among the predator and the moderately resistant GB 3B, thus indicating the possibility of integration between the two methods of control: host plant resistance and biological control.

Testes para avaliar a resistência de feijoeiro (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) a Diabrotica speciosa (Ger.) foram conduzidos com os genótipos Goiano Precoce, Jalo Precoce, PR 95105146, PR 95105142 (centro de domesticação Andino, AN), Emgopa 201 Ouro e IAPAR 57 (centro de domesticação Mesoamericano, MA), em 1998 e 1999, na Fazenda da UNESP-FCAV, Jaboticabal, SP, Brasil. Discos foliares obtidos de plantas com 20 dias de idade, mantidas em vasos, foram usados nos testes com e sem chance de escolha em BOD. No teste com chance de escolha 12 adultos foram confinados numa placa de Petri (140 mm de diâmetro), contendo dois discos de cada genótipo. No teste sem chance de escolha, foram confinados dois insetos numa placa de Petri (60 mm de diâmetro) com dois discos do genótipo a ser avaliado. No experimento de campo foram liberados 400 insetos e no 30º dia após o plantio, quinze folíolos por parcela foram coletados para avaliação do consumo foliar. Um experimento sem chance de escolha foi conduzido mantendo-se um vaso com um genótipo (com 20 dias de idade) em telados individuais cobertos com tecido voil onde liberaram-se 10 adultos por 72h. Os genótipos Emgopa 201 Ouro e IAPAR 57 (ambos MA) foram os mais preferidos nos testes conduzidos em BOD, campo e telados enquanto que os genótipos AN foram menos consumidos.

Tests were carried out to evaluate resistance of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) to Diabrotica speciosa (Ger.) with the genotypes Goiano Precoce, Jalo Precoce, PR 95105146, PR 95105142 (Andean domestication center, AN), Emgopa 201 Ouro and IAPAR 57 (Middle American domestication center, MA). The experiments were conducted in 1998 and 1999, at the farm of UNESP-FCAV, Jaboticabal, SP, Brazil. The genotypes were planted in pots and 20 day-old leaflets were collected and foliar disks were cut of for the test. Two trials, a no-choice test and a free-choice test, were set up in BOD. In free-choice test, two disks of each genotype were kept in a 140-mm-diameter petri dish (total of 12 disks), where 12 adults were confined. In no-choice test, two disks of one genotype and two insects were placed in a 60-mm-diameter petri dish. A field experiment was conducted when 400 adults of D. speciosa were released. Fifteen leaflets per plot were collected 30 days after planting and the leaf area consumption was evaluated. A no-choice experiment was carried out with 20 day-old genotypes protected in individual cages and infested by 10 adults, for 72h. The MA genotypes were the most preferred on feeding tests conducted at BOD, field and individual cages, while the AN genotypes were less eaten.

Alguns crisomelídeos atacam a abóbora desde a germinação até a colheita, destruindo folhas e causando danos característicos. Com o objetivo de selecionar genótipos de abóbora menos preferidos para alimentação por Diabrotica speciosa (Germar), realizaram-se ensaios, em condições de casa-de-vegetação e de laboratório, utilizando-se plântulas e discos foliares. Inicialmente avaliou-se a atratividade de 33 genótipos de abóbora Cucurbita moschata e um genótipo comercial de moranga C. maxima (Exposição), utilizado como genótipo suscetível padrão. Visando observar o consumo realizado em plântulas, efetuaram-se testes com e sem chance de escolha com oito genótipos selecionados a partir do ensaio de atratividade. Em placas de Petri, foram realizados testes de atratividade e consumo, com e sem chance de escolha, utilizando-se discos foliares de oito materiais. O índice de atratividade apontou o genótipo BRA003531 como o mais atrativo em relação ao padrão comercial (genótipo Exposição). Em teste de consumo com chance de escolha, utilizando-se plântulas, o genótipo BRA014869 foi o mais preferido para alimentação por adultos de D. speciosa, embora somente diferisse estatísticamente do genótipo BRA015059. BRA014958 revelou-se o mais consumido em teste sem chance de escolha com plântulas e em teste com chance de escolha utilizando-se discos foliares; em testes com discos foliares sem escolha, entretanto não se observaram diferenças entre os genótipos. Em geral todos os genótipos revelaram-se igualmente suscetíveis ao padrão Exposição, não tendo sido detectada a ocorrência de resistência do tipo não-preferência para alimentação.

Some chrysomelids attack the squash from germination to harvest, destroying leaves and causing characteristical damage. Aiming to select squash genotypes less preferred by Diabrotica speciosa (Germar), assays with seedlings and leaf disks were performed at greenhouse and laboratory conditions. Initially, the attractiveness of thirty-three Cucurbita moschata genotypes and one C. maxima genotype (Exposição) was evaluated, the former used as a standard susceptible genotype. Free and no choice tests were performed with eight genotypes selected previously to evaluate seedlings and leaf disks consumption and attractiveness. The index of attractiveness indicated BRA003531 as the most attractive genotype, comparatively to the standard susceptible one. In free choice test for seedling consumption, BRA014869 was the genotype most preferred by adults of D. speciosa, although no significant differences with the control genotype were detected. BRA014958 was the most consumed genotype both in no choice test with seedlings and in free choice test with leaf disks; no choice tests with leaf discs, however, showed no differences on leaf consumption among the genotypes. All genotypes were as suscetible as the standard genotype, and the occurrence of non-preference for feeding as a resistance mechanism was not detected.

A biologia de Bemisia tabaci biótipo B (Genn.) foi avaliada em genótipos de feijoeiro (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) que contêm arcelina em suas sementes. Foi também realizada análise bioquímica de proteínas, em sementes e em folhas dos genótipos de feijoeiro, a fim de verificar se haveria traços de arcelina nas folhas dos materiais a serem avaliados. Os testes foram conduzidos em condições de casa de vegetação, nas épocas "das águas" e "da seca", em dois anos consecutivos, com os seguintes genótipos: ARC 3s, ARC 5s (genótipos selvagens portadores de arcelina); ARC 1, ARC 2, ARC 3, ARC 4 (linhagens quase-isogênicas portadoras de arcelina - EMBRAPA), Porrillo 70, Bolinha e IAPAR MD 808 (genótipos sem arcelina). Os genótipos selvagens, ARC 3s e ARC 5s, apresentaram altos níveis de antibiose, com ênfase para o ARC 5s (as ninfas tiveram alta mortalidade, em torno de 90%). O prolongamento do ciclo de desenvolvimento dos insetos provenientes do genótipo ARC 5s podem sugerir uma resistência do tipo antibiose e/ou não-preferência para alimentação. A resistência dos genótipos selvagens não está relacionada com a presença de arcelina nas sementes, já que nenhum traço dessa proteína foi encontrado nas folhas destes.

The biology of Bemisia tabaci biotype B (Genn.) on bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) genotypes containing arcelin in the seeds was evaluated. Also, biochemical screening of seeds and leaves material of these genotypes were carried out in order to verify if traces of arcelin could be found in its leaves. The tests were conducted under greenhouse conditions, in the dry and wet seasons, with the following genotypes: ARC 3s, ARC 5s (wild genotypes containing arcelin in the seeds); ARC 1, ARC 2, ARC 3, ARC 4 (near isogenic lines containing arcelin in the seeds - EMBRAPA) and Porrillo 70, Bolinha, IAPAR MD 808 (commercial genotypes without arcelin). The wild genotypes, ARC 3s and ARC 5s, showed high levels of antibiosis resistance type, mainly for ARC 5s which presented the highest nymphs mortality rates, approximately 90%. Also, the longest development time for nymphs fed on ARC 5s genotype suggest antibiosis and/or feeding nonpreference resistance type. The wild genotype resistance is not related with arcelin presence in the seeds, since no trace of this protein was found in its leaves.

Genótipos de feijoeiro (P. vulgaris) que contêm arcelina em suas sementes foram avaliados quanto à preferência para oviposição de Bemisia tabaci biótipo B (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae). Os testes foram conduzidos em condições de estufa, nas épocas "das águas" e "da seca", em dois anos consecutivos, com os seguintes genótipos: ARC 3s, ARC 5s (genótipos selvagens portadores de arcelina); ARC 1, ARC 2, ARC 3, ARC 4 (linhagens quase-isogênicas portadoras de arcelina - EMBRAPA), Porrillo 70, Bolinha e IAPAR MD 808 (cultivares sem arcelina). Nos ensaios de preferência para oviposição, em teste com e sem chance de escolha, observou-se que os genótipos Bolinha e Porrillo 70 foram os mais preferidos para oviposição pelo inseto. A suscetibilidade do genótipo Bolinha pode estar relacionada com o grande número de tricomas aciculares presentes em suas folhas. Os genótipos selvagens, ARC 5s e ARC 3s, apresentaram resistência do tipo não-preferência para oviposição. Esta resistência não está relacionada com a arcelina, uma vez que os genótipos melhorados também contêm arcelina em suas sementes e não mostraram-se resistentes a esse biótipo de B. tabaci.

The oviposition preference of Bemisia tabaci biotype B (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) for bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) genotypes containing arcelin in the seeds was evaluated. The tests were carried out under greenhouse conditions, in the dry and wet seasons, with the following genotypes: ARC 3s, ARC 5s (wild genotypes containing arcelin in the seeds); ARC 1, ARC 2, ARC 3, ARC 4 (near isogenic lines containing arcelin in the seeds - EMBRAPA) and Porrillo 70, Bolinha, IAPAR MD 808 (commercial genotypes without arcelin). In the free choice and no-choice oviposition tests, Bolinha and Porrillo 70 genotypes were preferred for oviposition by that insect. The Bolinha susceptibility could be related to the great number of acicular trichomes presents on its leaves surface. The wild genotypes, ARC 5s and ARC 3s, showed oviposition nonpreference resistance type. This resistance is not related to the arcelin variants, since the bred genotypes also contain arcelin in its seeds and did not show resistance to B. tabaci, biotype B.

Avaliou-se a preferência alimentar de adultos de Diabrotica speciosa (Germar), pelos genótipos de batata Achat, Baronesa, Monalisa, N 140-201 e NYL 235-4. Foram realizados ensaios com e sem chance de escolha, em laboratórios e em casa de vegetação, na FCAV/UNESP, Jaboticabal, SP. Em dois testes utilizaram-se discos de folíolos provenientes de plantios em vaso (plantas com 40 dias); em outros seis semelhantes (exceção ao genótipo N 140-201) foram utilizados discos de folíolos provenientes de plantio de campo (plantas com 30, 50 e 70 dias). Nas placas de Petri (repetições) foram liberados dois adultos/disco. Dois outros ensaios foram efetuados em gaiolas (sem chance de escolha), no interior de casa de vegetação, com plantas com 15 e 45 dias de idade, liberando-se três e 10 adultos/planta respectivamente, avaliando-se o consumo de área foliar quatro e cinco dias após. Nos testes em laboratório com material de vaso, o genótipo NYL 235-4 (com e sem chance) foi o menos consumido (1,08 a 1,12 mg de peso seco). Com material de campo (com e sem chance), o peso de matéria fresca consumida pela praga foi menor em NYL 235-4 (médias de 26,2 e 66,1 mg) e Baronesa (30,2 e 57,9 mg). Nos ensaios em gaiolas (sem chance) também verificou-se menor consumo em NYL 235-4 (3,35 cm² e 16,70 cm²/planta). Esses resultados revelam que o genótipo NYL 235-4 apresenta resistência do tipo não-preferência para alimentação em relação a D. speciosa.

The feeding nonpreference of adults of Diabrotica speciosa (Germar) for the Achat, Baronesa, Monalisa, N 140-201 and NYL 235-4 potato genotypes was evaluated. Free choice and no choice tests were accomplished, in laboratories and greenhouse conditions, in Jaboticabal, SP, Brazil. In two tests, leaflets disks of plants 40 days-old (sowed in pots) were used. In another six tests, with the same genotypes (except N 140-201), the disks were collected from field grown plants with 30, 50 and 70 d.a.p. In the Petri dishes (replications or blocks), adults of D. speciosa were released in the rate of two/disk; the consumption was evaluated after 24 hours. Two other no choice tests were run in cages, on plants with 15 and 45 d.a.p., where three and 10 adults/plant were released respectively; the leaf area consumption was evaluated four and five days later. The NYL 235-4 genotype was the least consumed (1.08 to 1.12 mg dry weight) in free choice and no choice laboratory tests (plants sowed in pots). With field material (free choice and no choice tests), NYL 235-4 (26.2 and 66.1 mg of fresh weight) and Baronesa (30.2 and 57.9 mg of fresh weight) were the least consumed. In the cage tests (no choice) the lowest consumption was also verified in NYL 235-4 (3.35 cm² and 16.70 cm²/plant). Those results show that feeding nonpreference is the resistance mechanism of the NYL 235-4 potato genotype to the adults of D. speciosa.

Avaliou-se a preferência para oviposição e alimentação de Alabama argillacea (Huebner, 1818) por genótipos de algodoeiro (Gossypium hirsutum L.). Em condições de campo, os genótipos avaliados foram: IAC 21, CNPA 2H, CNPA 7H, HR 21 T 16, HR 102, JPM 157, STO 285 N, SU 0450, T 267-12-14, T 277-2-6, T 295-3-2, T 695-8-22, T 941-274, T 953-13-4-2 e T 1122-13-1. Efetuou-se a contagem de ovos em 10 folhas/parcela, amostrando-se o terço superior de 10 plantas. Paralelamente, foram conduzidos dois ensaios, com e sem chance de escolha, com os genótipos CNPA 9211-21, CNPA 9211-31, JPM 157, STO 285 N, T 953-13-4-2 e T 1122-13-1, plantados em vasos, no interior de telados. Os ensaios de preferência para alimentação foram efetuados em laboratório, com discos de folhas daqueles seis genótipos. Utilizaram-se larvas de primeiro e terceiro ínstar, efetuando-se 20 repetições e avaliando-se o peso seco do alimento consumido. Constatou-se que a oviposição foi semelhante, estatisticamente, nos genótipos em estudo, excluindo-se portanto qualquer resistência do tipo não-preferência para oviposição. O genótipo CNPA 9211-31 foi o menos consumido por larvas de primeiro ínstar, indicando que um dos tipos de resistência desse genótipo a A. argillacea é não-preferência para alimentação.

The mechanism of resistance (nonpreference) of cotton genotypes (Gossypium hirsutum L.) to the cotton leafworm, Alabama argillacea (Huebner, 1818) was studied. Oviposition nonpreference in field (15 genotypes) and cages (six genotypes) were evaluated in free choice and no choice tests. The eggs present in the upper third of the plants were counted. Feeding nonpreference was evaluated with leaf disks, under laboratory conditions, using the genotypes CNPA 9211-21, CNPA 9211-31, JPM 157, STO 285 N, T 953-13-4-2 and T 1122-13-1, and first and third instar larvae, with twenty replications. Nonpreference was measured through dry weight consumption. No oviposition preference was found among the studied genotypes. The CNPA 9211-31 genotype was less consumed by small larvae, thus indicating that the feeding nonpreference mechanism of resistance to A. argillacea is present in this genotype.
